When Jackson do Pandeiro died in 1982, he left strewn about Brazil a musical legacy that is only now beginning to be collected and catalogued. He was honored by the Sharp Award for popular music, and tribute CDs have been released. A biography by Fernando Moura and Antonio Vicente, “Jackson do Pandeiro: o Rei do Ritmo was released in 2001.
In November 1953, radio stations in Recife and throughout Brazil began including the songs “Sebastiana” and “Forró do Limoeiro” on their playlists. Fifty years later, Jackson do Pandeiro’s influence permeates forró, MPB and contemporary pop. He wasn’t just a point of convergence for otherwise seemingly disparate rhythms, like rural coco and urban samba; he was also true innovator.
