In recent decades Brazil’s National Rodeo League has developed into a major sport. Many cities host major competitions, but without a doubt the flagship encounter is the annual Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro in Barretos, a town of over 100,000 located 440 kilometers outside São Paulo. In his book River of Tears: Country Music, Memory, and Modernity in Brazil, anthropologist Alexander Sebastian Dent of The George Washington University describes the Barretos rodeo.
