Located in the Amazon, the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park is the world’s largest national park in a tropical forest. Along the border with French Guyana in the northern state of Amapá, the 39,000 square kilometer protected area is roughly the size of Belgium or Maryland. It accounts for 27% of the total area of Amapá state.

The area is almost entirely uninhabited by humans. Reconnaissance flights have revealed a smattering of wildcat miners, but no traces of native Indians or other riverine peoples. “This is really a region of headwaters,” said a representative of the World Wildlife Fund. “There are actually waterfalls. It is a different habitat than the rest of the Amazon. Riverine populations usually like to live along small creeks.”
