Tourism Accommodation Requirements and Information Needs of People with Mobility Disabilities. You are invited to take part in a research study conducted by the University of Technology Sydney on the tourism accommodation needs of people with mobility disabilities. The research aims to identify the room requirements and preferred information format for presenting accessible accommodation so that a person is able to make an informed decision for their needs.

The questionnaire is designed for people with mobility disabilities to answer. However, we welcome carers/attendants, family or friends completing the survey based on the needs of those who require accessible accommodation that they travel with. For example, if you are a parent of a child with a disability you should answer the questionnaire based on the access needs of your child.

Your participation in this study is highly valued whether you travel frequently or not.

The questionnaire will take about 15 minutes to complete.

Please click on the link below to be directed to the questionnaire http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=63033650891

The research focuses on accessible rooms (sometimes referred to as 'disabled rooms') that accommodate people with mobility disabilities as designated under the Building Codes of Australia and the referenced Australian Standards for Access and Mobility (AS1428). This research does not exclude people with hearing, vision or other disabilities from completing the survey. However, other research is currently being conducted on the tourist experiences of people who are blind or vision impaired. In addition, the Hotel Motel Accommodation Association and the Deafness Forum announced in 2005 an industry agreement regarding the provision of accessible facilities for people who are Deaf or hearing impaired. We would welcome people with any disability completing the survey if they regularly use designated accessible rooms.

Alternative formats If you require an alternative format or would like to complete this questionnaire by phone, please contact: Dr. Simon Darcy Faculty of Business University of Technology, Sydney Ph: 02 9514-5100 Email: simon.darcy@uts.edu.au

Ethics All responses are anonymous and confidential. The project has been approved by the UTS Human Research Ethics Committee (Ref No. 2006-24A) and any ethical issues arising from the research can be discussed with the UTS Research Ethics Manager Ms Susanna Gorman on Ph: 02 9514-1279

Mr. Possuello is a fascinating man. He loves nature and the outdoors. He likes to be in forest and he has done many interesting things in his life. He has loved nature since he was a kid. He knows how to survive in the forest. He has had malaria 39 times because of mosquitoes. He has eaten grasshoppers, ants, larvae, snakes fish, tapirs, capybara, and caiman to survive in the forest. He has had many great experiences with Indians, but he would never kill one. He is not afraid of snakes or the forest at night time. He has had trips to the forest that last 110 days. He also likes to fish. I think he should be very proud of his work.

Sydney Possuelo is a very brave and adventurous man. His determination is outstanding. If I had malaria one time I would probably not take any more chances. Possuelo has had malaria thirty nine times. It is easy to see how much he loves what he is doing with his life. The interview taught me many things about his life. Learning about what he did with his life is very interesting.

Apparently Sydney Possuelo has made many achievements in his life. He goes on expeditions so that he can learn about the indigenous tribes. He does not make contact with them but instead observes them from a distance. He does this because he believes that they want to be separated from the rest of the world because of recent attacks from white men and the diseases that they get from them. I was very interested in this article regarding such a well-known human rights activist.

Though loss of the Amazon rainforest is a rapidly growing problem, there are many actions people can take in saving it. Although the world won't stop needing soybeans, paper, beef, or many other things it largely produces, it is possible to lower the number of these that are in demand. There are many impacts on the environment as a result of deforestation, and the rainforest needs to be conserved as much as possible. I admire Mr. Possuelo's work.

I am impressed by Mr. Possuelo and there are some little steps that we can take when supporting the rainforest. First, recycling will help reduce the use of paper products. This lessens the logging in the rainforest because wood is not used as much. It is smart to buy paper with a FSC logo. This stands for Forest Stewardship Council which means it is recycled material.

Dear Mr. Armstrong,

My name is Blake H. Schmidt and I am program coordinator here at Iracambi's Research Center in the Atlantic Forest of Brasil. I was asked by Binka Le Breton to contact you and invite your students to come down our way to do internships and research projects. I understand you are work with students in the Brasil Studies Program. I have attached various documents which might interest you but some of which might be outside of the realm of study and interest of your students. If there are any of the following areas; Biological Studies; Forest Restoration; Generating Forest Income; Land Management or Social Context of the Forest that are of intrerest to you or your students please email and I can send you documents with more detailed information.

This information can be complemented by visiting our website or contacting me via this email address. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have and look forward to seeing how our institutions can work together.

Yours truly,

Blake H. Schmidt

I took the liberty of cross-posting a link this internship opportunity on our “study and work” section - http://www.brazilmax.com/forum/forum.cfm?FID=11 – where interested parties can find other opportunities.

There has also been a discussion about volunteer tourism in the Travel Tips section: http://www.brazilmax.com/forum/thread.cfm?TID=318
