On September 8 an effigy of the Paraty’s patron saint is carried in a procession around the historic downtown. More than 1.70m tall, the 19th-century cedar wood effigy is ornately decorated. A lively street fair runs parallel to the religious commemorations. Sundays in October, Rio de Janeiro, the Penha Festival - One of Rio’s largest religious and popular festivals, it takes place every Sunday in October and the first Sunday in November at Lady of Penha Church. October 7, São Paulo, opening of the São Paulo Biennial of Art (http://www.brazilmax.com/news1.cfm/tborigem/pl_southcentral/id/16) - The 27th edition of the São Paulo Biennial of Art, the 3rd most important global art extravaganza after the Venice biennial and Germany’s Documenta.
