Bianca's Brazil in Hollywood by Bianca Rossini other columns

Parties, Premières, Fashion and Literature

Los Angeles - Beverly Hills resident and fabulous party host, my friend Sety Madyoon, created a superb surprise birthday party for her well-known husband, cardiologist Dr. Hooman Madyoon. The party’s motif was all Brazilian - including sexy samba dancers. I couldn’t stop admiring the beauty of Persian man/woman who certainly knows how to dress for the occasion. Sety’s stunning home with its indoor pool, designed by architect Gerhard Heusch, provided the perfect setting for an all night celebration.

A-list director Tata Amaral’s film Antonia is stunning and intimate, a work of art and love, with superb performances by Nega Li, Cindy, Leilah and Quelynah. Antonia premiered in L.A. to a full audience.

Brazilian Tatiana A’Virmond shined as the most expressive ballet star soloist with Media City Ballet’s Noche de Sabor Program at the Alex Theater in Glendale.

In his fourth album, Samba Passarinho, my friend Brazilian pop artist Péri proves that genuine samba and bossa nova only needs voice and guitar. Once again he captivates with his innocence, charm and beauty.

Several Brazilian famous artists who live abroad - Carmem Gusmão (Miami), Rose Resnick (LA), Ricardo Koebsch (Paris) - opened at the Solange Rabello Gallery in Miami a new interactive art exhibition Fantasy Circus.

Arnaldo Nogueira Jr.’s creation Releituras.com is now one of the greatest, most accessed websites around. It features texts and bios (in Portuguese) of well-known and emerging Brazilian authors.

After I performed as a back up singer for my friend Hot Salsa Mama singer/songwriter Maggie Palomo for the Imagen Awards at the Walt Disney Hall, I met and talked to many great Latin personalities, stars and community leaders including: Carlos Mencia, Chita Rivera, Hector Elizondo, Helen Hernandez, Luca Bentivoglio, Gloria Molina, and Liliana Perez.

The very elegant ESPASSO Showroom hosted the launching campaign in Los Angeles for Friend of Brazil Foundation to support humanitarian projects in Brazil. Present were Council member of 4th District Tom LaBonge, who gave awards to the president of the foundation, Leona Forman, and General Consul of Brazil, Thereza Quintella.

The Brazilian historical city of Paraty is bubbling with cultural events at the Casa Cultural, under the superb direction of Rodrigo Cunha.

Up and coming New York-based Brazilian theater director Giovanna Sardelli is receiving rave reviews for her outstanding work in Two Thirds Home.

The 2007 edition of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) included several Brazilian feature films and documentaries. I had the pleasure of meeting with Chico Teixeira, Marcelo Cesena, Silvia Da Rin and Ricardo Van Steen. Some of my favorite films: Not By Chance by Philippe Barcinski; Adrift in Manhattan by Alfredo de Villa, with brilliant scoring by Michael A. Levine; and Ladrones by Jaime Marques. I had a chance to speak with Edward James Olmos and Marlene Dermer, who have once again created one of the best film festivals in town.

One of my favorite designers is Galina Sobolev. The party cum fashion show for her line SINGLE at 944 was a terrific success. Joining me there were lots of my friends, including Julie and Francesco Quinn (The Shield). I chatted with the charming Brazilian Bettina Duncan, owner of Fred Segal in Santa Monica. Galina’s line has a touch of Brazil, which makes me feel happy, sexy and feminine. Her fabrics are seductive, silky, and colorful, with a fun energy that brings out the sensual in the female form.

If you are a Brazilian film lover you can’t miss the new Brazilian Film series at UCLA. Launched by the director of UCLA Latin American Institute Randal Johnson with the support of Brazilian consul Thereza Quintella and the Consulate General of Brazil, it features a free, screening that is open to the public on the first Wednesday of every month.

My official myspace page is up!. It is designed by Andre (myspace.com/WCAPhotoStudio) and features a cover photo by Phil Fewsmith.

Special thanks to Don Heckman, Denise Dorman, Galina Sobolev, Fabio Garcia, André, and Luciana Maziero.
