Paraty Stories by Zezito

columnist bio

José Carlos de Oliveira Freire (Zezito) was born on August 27, 1922. He has lived and worked in Paraty his entire life and has always been active in the community. He served as a volunteer at the Santa Casa health center and played clarinet in the town’s brass bands - the Lyrical Youth Musical Corps and the Santa Cecília Musical Society. In 1962 he was elected to the city council, but soon dropped out of politics. In 1991 he began publishing essays of memories of his hometown in the local newspaper, “Jornal de Paraty.” In 1998 a collection of these essays was published in book form as “Crônicas de Paraty.” (To order a copy, click here.) He is married to Helena Miranda Freire. They have four children and eight grandchildren.
