José Nêumanne Pinto, a Brazilian poet, writer and journalist, was born in Uiraúna, a small town in the parched backlands of the Northeastern state of Paraíba, on May 18, 1951. He currently lives in São Paulo, where he works as a columnist for the daily newspaper Jornal da Tarde and as a commentator on Rádio Jovem Pan on the SBT television network news. As a journalist, he’s worked as a reporter for the daily newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, political editor for the daily newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, and newsroom director for the daily newspaper Jornal do Brasil. He won the Esso Economics Reporting Award and the Sports Writing Press Trophy, both in 1976. He contributed monthly editorials to the Op-Ed page of the Nuevo Herald, a Spanish language daily newspaper in Miami. He is the author of 10 books, including three collections of poetry: As Tábuas do Sol, Barcelona, Borborema
and Solos do Silêncio: Poesia Reunida. He has also published three novels (Mengele, a Natureza do Mal, Veneno na Veia), and the award-winning O Silencio do Delator; one non-fiction book of reportage (Atrás do Palanque); and two collections of political essays (Reféns do Passado and A República na Lama). He also released a CD, As Fugas do Sol, with the label CPC-UMES, on which he recites 30 poems accompanied by music composed and performed by Marcus Vinicius de Andrade. He selected the poems and wrote the introduction to the anthology Os Cem Melhores Poetas Brasileiros do Século, published by the Geração Editorial in 2001. He is married and has three children.
